Memoir
Excerpts from my work-in-progress, a memoir centered on the loss of my 19-year-old brother, have been published:
• As an essay titled "Early Harvest," winning entry in a competition co-sponsored by New York-based Obit magazine, Killing the Buddha, and the Rubin Museum of Art. Read "Early Harvest."
• In Strange Cargo, an Emerging Voices Anthology, 1997–2010, with an introduction by Janet Fitch. Distributed by Skylight Books in Los Angeles: Order Strange Cargo.
• As an unpublished essay that accompanied this 2004 exhibition of my photographs.
Award: PEN Center USA
I'm grateful to PEN and the Rosenthal Family Foundation for the 2009 Emerging Voices fellowship, and to my teachers and mentors through the PEN program, including Ellen Slezak, Erika Shickel, Amy Friedman, and Samantha Dunn.
Blog
My blog for the Huffington Post covers politics, culture, faith, health, and education. Go to my HuffPo archive.
Independent journalism
I'm an ongoing contributor of original, reported journalism to:
• Flaunt. I was featured in the 10th anniversary edition (issue #100) among Ten Notable Writers of the Decade, with a creative nonfiction piece on Lesbos Island. As a contributing writer to the magazine I also cover contemporary artists and designers, and my subjects have included Rosemarie Fiore (#89), Vaughan Rachel (#93), Danny Glick and Audrey Fisher (#103), and Susan Simpson (#106).
• Exposure: Journal of the Society for Photographic Education. For my column "Catching Up With..." I have interviewed legendary photographers Bruce Davidson, Duane Michals and Jerome Liebling, the renowned photography historian Naomi Rosenblum, and the multi-media artist and educator Joan Lyons.
• The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. I wrote 20+ stories highlighting community change throughout the United States and its territories: Winning Strategies in the Fight Against Childhood Obesity.
• The California Endowment. Contributed five years of cover stories, photographs and other content for The Endowment's flagship publication CenterScene, and grantee stories for its Annual Report.
• The statewide initiative Healthy Eating, Active Communities.
• The Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program.
Personal essay
My relationship to my undergraduate alma mater was tethered by little more than a bullet point on a résumé, until I fell in with a posse of L.A. public high school students. Read "How I Made my Alma Mater Matter."
Photography: Boulevard Without Borders
I founded and collaborated on this youth photography project with fellow artists Brian Moss and Pato Hebert.
Photography: 18th Street Arts Center
I've had two solo exhibitions at this interdisciplinary arts center, including Alex, Amen, reviewed by the L.A. Weekly.
My crew: MMIX Los Angeles Writers
Eight of us—poets, fiction and nonfiction writers—formed this group in 2009 and give public readings several times a year. (MMIX is pronounced "mix," in case you were wondering.)
